Let’s clear some clutter…

I freely admit… I just love clearing clutter at the beginning of each New Year. As much as I love celebrating Christmas and New Year’s, I absolutely love taking decorations down, putting them back into their labeled boxes and commencing my oddly instinctual decluttering and organizing process.

I clearly enjoy the process much more than most, but I don’t think I’m completely alone in finding that the New Year can bring a fresh eye to our surroundings. I think a few things are at play… First, the holidays bring a break from the normal routine. Not only do most people have a little extra time at home to declutter and organize, but the break in our routine allows us to see some things from a fresh perspective. Secondly, most of us feel blessed for one reason or another around the holidays so when our cup is full we are more willing to get rid of things that are weighing us down. And lastly, there is the obvious necessity to find homes for any new toys or gifts received.  Whether it’s one or all of these things to prompt some of you (and me) to start decluttering or organizing… I say it’s a good thing!

I’ve got quite the stash of things to donate or sell. If you do as well, you are in luck! This Saturday, January 25th is the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) Austin’s annual Clear Your Clutter Day. It’s an awesome FREE event in which our local NAPO chapter partners with great organizations around Austin to collect your unwanted things and get them into the right hands. For example, Dress for Success will take any business attire that unemployed women may use for employment interviews, and The Settlement Home will take anything that they can use in their annual garage sale which directly benefits neglected and abused children. All you do is pull up your car and the volunteers do the rest. You get tax receipts and you are on your way. Oh, and there is a Container Store gift card for the strangest item donated! Hope to see some of you there…
